The commercial case

For a business, the cost of an outage is not the electricity bill

A clinic that loses power loses billable hours and risks its cold chain. A showroom in darkness loses the walk-in. A branch office sends staff home. The electricity saving matters, but the continuity usually matters more, and it is the part most proposals ignore.

We design commercial systems around both. The array reduces the bill during working hours. Where the load justifies it, storage carries the site through outages so the business does not stop.

Every commercial installation is metered, so the output you were promised can be checked against the output you receive. That is the point of an itemised proposal from a licensed engineer rather than a headline price from a trader.

Monthly electricity billWhat most proposals optimiseLost trading hours in the same monthWhat most proposals ignoreStorage addresses both. An array on its own addresses only the first.
Indicative for a mid sized clinic or showroom. The electricity saving is real, but for a business that cannot trade in the dark the cost of the outages is usually the larger of the two numbers. A proposal that only prices the bill is answering half the question.

Where it fits

Businesses we build for

  • Clinics, labs and pharmacies

Diagnostic equipment does not power cycle, refrigeration holds, and consultation hours stay billable through an unannounced outage.

  • Showrooms and retail

Lighting, air conditioning and point of sale stay live. A dark shop during peak hours costs more than the month's electricity.

  • Offices and branches

Servers, network and workstations ride through the transition. Staff do not lose the afternoon.

  • Warehouses and cold stores

Refrigeration and material handling carry through, protecting stock that an outage would otherwise put at risk.

How we work

What a commercial engagement includes

  • Load profile study across a full operating week
  • Structural assessment of the roof or ground area
  • Single line diagram and protection design
  • Itemised bill of materials with every line justified
  • Net billing application prepared and filed
  • Commissioning certificate signed by a named PEC licensed engineer
  • Monitoring so output can be audited against the proposal
  • Operations and maintenance contract available from day one

Questions from business owners

How is a commercial system different from a larger house system?
Three ways. The load study runs across a full operating week rather than a billing cycle. The design has to survive a protection and single line review rather than just work. And continuity is usually worth more than the tariff saving, so the specification is driven by which circuits cannot be allowed to stop.
What size system does a clinic or showroom typically need?
Between 50 kW and 250 kW for most single site commercial premises. The driver is connected load and operating hours rather than floor area. A 24 hour pharmacy and a nine to five showroom of the same size need materially different systems.
Can we keep trading through an outage?
With storage, yes, for the circuits you nominate. A hybrid inverter transfers in under 20 milliseconds, which is fast enough that point of sale terminals, servers and refrigeration do not restart. Without storage the array shuts down for safety during a grid failure, so the premises go dark with the sun still up.
How do we verify we are getting the output we were promised?
Every commercial installation we do is metered and monitored. You can audit actual generation against the figure in the proposal month by month. Ask any contractor how you would check their projection after commissioning; if there is no answer, the projection is not a commitment.
Will this interfere with our existing generator?
It should not, and the design accounts for it. Generator and solar interaction is a real engineering question, particularly around the transfer arrangement and whether the inverter is permitted to export to a generator supplied bus. It is settled at design stage and recorded on the single line diagram.
Do we need to close the business during installation?
No. Roof work happens while you trade. There is normally one planned shutdown of a few hours for the final tie-in and commissioning, which we schedule around your quietest period rather than ours.
What is the payback on a commercial system?
Typically three to five years on the tariff saving alone. Where outages are costing you trading hours, the effective payback is shorter, but that part depends on numbers only you have. We will model it with you rather than assume a figure.
Can we finance it or lease it?
We do not provide finance ourselves. Several Pakistani banks run solar financing products and we will supply whatever documentation the bank asks for, including the itemised bill of materials and the engineer's design, which is usually what they want to see.

Send us a week of your load and we will show you the uptime case

For a business the electricity saving is rarely the largest number. We model the saving and the cost of the outages you are currently absorbing, then quote against both.
