Hybrid solar systems, the 2026 default

Solar, a hybrid inverter and storage working as one system, so the power you generate is used in your own home instead of sold at a loss.

Why hybrid

An upgrade in 2024, the sensible default in 2026

An on-grid system sends surplus generation to the grid and draws it back when the sun is down. That worked while net metering credited exports one for one. It does not work now.

A hybrid system puts a battery between the two. Surplus generation charges the battery instead of being exported at roughly PKR 11, and the house draws from the battery in the evening instead of importing at PKR 37 to PKR 55. The same solar array produces a materially better result.

There is a second benefit that has nothing to do with tariffs. A hybrid inverter transfers to battery in under 20 milliseconds, which is faster than a computer or a router notices. The grid can fail and the house keeps running.

A rooftop array makes its power in the middle of the day. A Pakistani household uses most of its power after sunset. Storage moves the orange surplus across to cover the blue evening gap, which is the whole reason a battery pays.

How it works

Four parts, one system

  • Solar array

Sized to cover daytime consumption with enough surplus to charge the battery before evening.

  • Hybrid inverter

Manages the array, the battery, the grid and the house load, and handles the transfer when the grid drops.

  • PentaVault storage

Stores the surplus. From 5.12 kWh for essentials up to 16 kWh for whole-home backup, expandable in parallel.

  • Your existing connection

The grid stays as backup and as the route for any genuine surplus, with net billing filed on your behalf.

The decision

On-grid or hybrid, on the same roof

Identical array, identical panels, identical installer. The only difference is whether a battery sits between your roof and the grid.

On-grid, no storage compared with Hybrid with PentaVault
What to checkOn-grid, no storageHybrid with PentaVault
Midday surplusExported to the grid and paid for at about PKR 11.33 a unit.Stored in the cabinet and used by your own house that evening.
Evening consumptionImported from the grid at PKR 37 to PKR 55 a unit.Drawn from the battery at no additional cost per unit.
During an outageThe array shuts down for safety. The house is dark with the sun still up.Transfer in under 20 milliseconds. Nothing in the house restarts.
Upfront costLower, because there is no cabinet to buy.Higher upfront, recovered through the price gap above.
Best suited toDaytime shift factories, offices that close at six, sites with no overnight load.Households, clinics, retail, and anywhere the evening matters.

Hybrid questions

Can I convert an existing on-grid system to hybrid?
Usually yes, by changing the inverter and adding storage. Do it carefully if your system was sanctioned before February 2026: applying to enhance generation capacity moves the connection onto net billing and you lose the grandfathered terms. Adding storage on its own generally does not trigger that.
Which inverters do you support?
PentaVault is tested against Deye, Solis, Growatt, Sungrow, GoodWe, Inverex, SRNE and Voltronic, with the communication protocol and working settings documented for each. If yours is not on the list, send us the model and firmware and we will confirm before you commit.
How long will the battery run the house?
It depends on what you run, not on the size of the house. A 5.12 kWh cabinet covers lights, fans, fridge, router and cameras for a full evening. A 16 kWh cabinet covers one or two AC zones and a pump through a summer night. The survey turns that into a number for your load.
What is sub-20 millisecond switchover and does it matter?
It is how long the inverter takes to move the house from grid to battery when the grid fails. Below roughly 20 milliseconds a computer, router or refrigerator does not register the interruption, so nothing reboots. Above it, you notice every outage, which for a home office is the difference between a nuisance and a lost afternoon.
Does the battery degrade if it cycles every day?
It is designed to. Our residential cabinets are rated at 6,000 and 8,000 cycles measured to 70 percent residual capacity, which at roughly one cycle a day is sixteen to twenty years of daily use before reaching that threshold. Be wary of a cycle life number quoted without the residual capacity it was measured at.
Is a hybrid system noisy?
The inverter has a cooling fan that is audible in a quiet room, which is why placement is a design decision rather than a convenience. The battery cabinets are silent. We site both away from bedrooms where the cable run allows.
Do I still need the grid connection?
In almost every case, yes, and you should want it. Going fully off-grid in an urban Pakistani setting means oversizing both the array and the storage to cover the worst week of the year, which costs far more than it saves. The grid is the cheapest backup you will ever buy.
What maintenance does a hybrid system need?
Cleaning through the smog season, an annual electrical inspection, and a check of the battery management data. The battery itself needs nothing from you. Most underperformance we find on other people's systems is dirt or a settings problem, not a failed component.

Send us last month's bill and we will come back with an indicative system size and a price band. A site survey then turns it into a design, with the battery sized against what must keep running rather than against your roof area.
